Open Science & Indigenous Knowledge: Challenges & Solutions

"The Indigenous Centre for Cumulative Effects (ICCE) is facilitating discussions with the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, Chipewyan Prairie Dene First Nation, Fort McKay First Nation, Mikisew Cree First Nation, and the Open Science and Data Platform (OSDP) teams from Natural Resources Canada (NRCan) and Environment and Climate Change Canada (ECCC) to launch a pilot project that respectfully integrates Indigenous Knowledge (IK) and Indigenous owned data into the OSDP.

A panel discussion with pilot project participants will highlight the vital role of IK in comprehending industrial impacts on Indigenous communities, addressing responsible data sharing issues. This discussion will underscore the importance of honoring Indigenous communities' rights and traditions while sharing knowledge appropriately (e.g., following OCAP principles) and integrating IK into decision-making. Valuable insights from pilot project co-leaders and a possible technical OSDP demonstration will be included. Mr. Sean Power, Executive Officer and Entrepreneur-In-Residence at ICCE, will moderate the panel."
